Adjectival Participle:

The participle is a non-finite form of a verb. The participle which functions as adjective. These participles have tense as aspects. Like other adjectives this also agrees with the noun in gender and number.


bai hau byo ‘sitting boy’ [the boy who is sitting]
bai hane bye ‘sitting boys’
bai hani mole ‘sitting girl’
bai hani moleyo ‘sitting girls’
c.hiido gulus ‘torned cloth’
c.hiide gulusa ‘torned clothes’
za :zisu ga: i ‘moving train’
na: Ribyahau mu ‘falling man’
doyeto gulusa ‘washed clothes’
pu :ito pu:o ‘blossomed flowers’
silitheto zbRitheto mu ‘educated man’

Degrees of Comparison:

The degrees of comparison are comparable with the adjectives in that they modify a noun. There are two degrees of comparison, viz., comparative and superlative.

Comparative Degree:

The comparative degree is expressed by adding dyo ‘than’ to the noun with which the comparison is made or which serves as the model for comparison. Like Hindi, in the comparative construction, the order of words will be like this:


Subject - Model + dyo - objective or adverb - verb.
mu: sa sampeldyo seno bet

‘Moosa is younger than sampel’
