[Work on the Kuvi language was started in
1971. The data were collected during two field trips to Orissa
in 1971 and 1972 by Dr. B. Ramakrishna Reddy who subsequently
left the Institute. The present author who later joined the
Institute checked the data and collected additional data on
dialect varia- tion during a field trip in ]973. The grammar was
written thereafter. ]

I wish to acknowledge the help and co-operation
which has been extended to me by many officials and
non-officials. Special mention must be made of the Secretary of
Education, Govt. of Orissa, for the initiative and interest in
the project; the Directors of Education, Orissa; officers of the
Education Dept., Koraput District, and Sri Gopinath Mohanty,

Tumuluguda, Miniyaka Kurma, Udayanath Sauta of Laxmipur, Butti
