Verbal nouns are negated by adding the negative suffix -?a to the verb root which is followed by the nominalizer.

Non-finite Verbs

Morphologically, a non-finite verb does not carry person number-gender in agreement with the subject. Syntactically, non-finite verbs do not occur as predicates of the main clause.

Infinitives
The infinitive is the form of the verb which is not inflected for tense and does not carry the person-number-gender suffix. The infinitive suffix is -eli ~ -ali ~ -heli ~ -jeli. The infinitive form of the verb is used.

as a noun

ŗu:heli dassojana ha:ţite? è

‘I called ten persons for ploughing’


6.12.1.2.
 

as a verbal modifier 

evaņa munje evasi le:buhū hiyali gurnitesi

‘In his presence he grumbled to give money’

evaņa? â venjali ajjitesi

‘He was afraid to ask him’

predicatively with the imperative form of the verb hi- ‘give’ to form a construction which expresses permission (cf. 6.7.4.)

nańge va:heli hiyyamu 

‘let me come/allow me to come’

mańge va:heli hiyyamu 

‘let us come’

evaņa?â va:heli himu 

‘let him come’

eda?â va:heli himu 

‘let her/it come’

evara?â va:heli himu 

‘let them (m.) come’

evasika?a va:heli himu 

‘let them (f.) come’

eva?â va:heli himu 

‘let them (n.) come’


This construction cannot be used with the second person singular or plural

Predicatively in the obligative mood to express imposition of obligation on the subject with the form vele meaning should, must. (of. 6.7.7.2.)
 

ni:nu va:heii ve:le 

‘you should come’

illu pa:rceli ve:le  ‘This house should be sold’

 
6.12.2.
 

Verbal nouns

The verb root with the suffix -nayi is used as a noun. It is semantically equivalent to the infinitive form with -eli which is also used as a verbal noun, though there are grammatical constraints on its occurrence.
