 Negative sentences :

1. The negative markers in Bhumij are ka, bano, and alo, bano is the negation of existence; alo occurs in other places. ka occurs generally before the verb within VP. Though negative is dealt in the morphology, it is necessary to deal in the syntax also. The negative sentences are not produced just by adding the negative marker. There are problems in deriving certain negative sentences. The following sentences are simple negative sentences :

1.

a?e

aiŋ-a

 boko

 ka-heke
  She I-case sister  neg-is
‘She is not my sister’

2.

 ¸iaa

 aiŋ-a

a

 ka-heke
  this I-case  house  neg-is
‘This is not my house’

3.

¸
iaa

 aiŋ-a

 kami

ka-heke
  this  I-case  house

 neg-is

‘She is not my sister’

If the negative marker ka-does not occur with the verb, then the sentence is ungrammatical. The following sentences are grammatical.

‘Soma does not by fruits’

But the following two sentences are ungrammatical.

5.

*soma

 ka-jo-ko

 kriŋa
