ABUJHMARIA GRAMMAR

6.1.3. Complex numerals are divided into two groups as those involving the process of summation (i.e., from twentyone and thirtynine) and those involving muliplication and summation (i.e., forty and above).
Numerals from twentyone to twentynine are formed by the addition of basic numerals to the form ko:i: meaning ‘twenty’. In that process the postposition me:n meaning ‘more or above’ added to ko:i:. This appears to be a borrowed feature from Hindi as found spoken in some areas in the expressions like, bi:s par ti:n ‘three above twenty = twentythree’ etc. For example:
21 ko:i: me:n one (= 20 + 1)
25 ko:i: me:n (h)ay (= 20 + 5)
29 ki:i: me:n naw (= 20 + 9)
Thirty is ea: ko:i: (and not ko:i: me:n das) meaning ‘twenty and a half of it’. ea: is a borrowed word from Indo-Aryan he: which means ‘one and a half’.
The numbers from thiryone to thirtynine are formed by the addition of the numbers from eleven to nineteen to the form ko:i: ‘twenty’.
31 ko:i: me:n gya:ra: (= 20 + 11)
32 ko:i: me:n ba:ra: (= 20 + 12)
33 ko:i: me:n te:ra: (= 20 + 13)
34 ko:i: me:n cawda: (= 20 + 14) and so on, but not as ea: ko:i: ond thirtyone’, etc.
6.1.4. In Abujhmaria the higher numbers are counted in twenties. Twenties such as, forty, sixty, eighty and hundred are formed by the process of multiplication or the numbers ren, mu:n, na:lu and (h)ay with that of ko:i ‘twenty’.
40 ren ko:i (= 2 x 20)
60 mu:n ko:i: (= 3 x 20)
80 na:lu ko:i: (= 4 x 20)
100 (h)ay ko:i: (=5 x 20)
The final - of ko:i: in the above forms may be connected with the non-masculine plural suffix - as found in the examples a:ki: ‘leaves’, pilla: ‘girls’, talla: ‘head’, etc.
The in-between-numbers are formed by the addition of the numerals one to nineteen to the twenties mentioned earlier.
41 ren ko:i: one (= 2 x 20 +1)
42 ren ko:i: naw (= 2 x 20 + 9)
53 ren ko:i: te:ra: ) = 2 x 20 + 13)
67 mu:n ko:i: sa:t(u:) (= 3 x 20 + 7)
76 mu:n ko:i: so:ra: ( = 3 x 20 + 16)
85 na:lu ko:i: (h)ay ( = 4 x 20 + 5) and so on.
