It occurs elsewhere.

/a/ has three allophones [], [A] and [a].
[] Mean-mid unrounded central vowel.
  It occurs medially before retroflex stops // and //, retroflex lateral //and their geminates.
  [napU] /naapu/ 'behavior'
  [ki] /kai/ 'dance'
  [nU] /nau/ 'waist'
  [pe/ /pae/ 'Brahmin'
  [jE] /jae/ 'fool'
