A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF URALI
Sam Mohan Lal
CHAPTER 5
MORPHOPHONEMICS
A morpheme may occur with a single phonemic shape or in more than one phonemic form. In this chapter, the various morphophonemic changes found in Urali are discussed highlighting the place of occurrence of the phoneme in question which involves change in the continuous speech. In short, this chapter presents a structural description of the Urali morphophonemics.
In this chapter, the occurrence of Sandhi between two morphemes alone is discussed. The ampersand ‘&’ which will be deleted finally indicates the morphemic boundary and ‘-’ represents the place of occurrence of the phoneme that undergoes change. There are altogether twenty four rules showing the types of morphophonemic changes identified and explained in the body of the grammar. All the rules given in this chapter are ordered and if more than one rule operates, they operate one after the other.
Certain exceptions to the general rules given in this chapter are found and these exceptions and their environmental conditions are stated then and there after the particular rule where such irregularity is noticed.
