CHAPTER 4 |
VERBS |
Verbs are those which can take or are capable of taking tense suffixes and pronominal terminations for number and gender. Verbs in Urali are classified mainly into two types, on the basis of its behaviour in a sentence. They are, |
i) transitive verbs, and |
ii) intransitive verbs |
The transitive verbs can take object whereas the intrasitive verbs cannot. |
Transitive verbs |
Transitive verbs are further classified into two types. They are, |
a) Inherent transitives and |
b) Derived transitives |
Inherent transitives are those verbs which do not have any overt marker to denote transitivity and Derived transitives are those verbs which are derived from the corresponding intransitive. |
Intransitive verbs |
Intransitive verbs are further sub divided into two types. They are, |
a) Intransitive1 (Intr1) |
b) Intransitive2 (Intr2) |
Intransitive1 are those verbs which cannot be made transitive and Intransitive2 are those verbs which can be made transitive. The intrasitive2 (Intr2) verb stems may further be classified into three classes on the basis of their behaviour while transitivising the verbs. They are as follows: |
i) Those of the intransitive2 stems which take -k- as transitive suffix. |
ii) Those of the intransitive2 stems which take -tt- as transitive suffix. |
iii) Those of the intransitive2 stems which take -t- as the transitive suffix. |
4.1. Stem Classification |
On the basis of the past tense markers the verbs take, all the verb stems in Urali belonging to both transitive and intransitive are classified into six classes. The verb stems belong to class I take -in-; class II take -nd-; class III take -t-; class IV take -dd-; class V take -d-; and class VI take -n- as past tense markers. |
All the verb stems of Urali, irrespective of the past tense markers they take, will take -in- as the past tense marker in causative construction. That is, the past tense marker-in-will follow the causative marker. |
4.1.1. Class I |
All those verb stems which take -in- as past tense suffix belong to this class. |
