'thanks Ivery much2, to all my Mao friends who have given
liberally of. their time, energy and language between October
and December 1982 and April and June 1984, when I toured the
MaoNaga villages in the Senapati district of Manipur. In
fact iowe a diffuse debt of grattitude to the community of MaoNagas as a
whole, especially to the villagers of Punanamai where I was
billeted for more than a month and whose overwhelming display
of warmth was led by Mr. D. Lowli, the District Sports Officer,

Thanks are returned to Dr. B. B. Rajapurohit and Shri Nagaraj,
my colleagues in CIIL for spectrographic help, for helping get
at the exact nature of some sounds whose elucidation was
impossible without recourse to spectrograph, and to Prof.
William Wang of the University of California, Berkeley 'for
lending his ears and bolstering my own conclusions about four
level tones that I came to when I firsl cracked the system.
Prof.Wang may not, however, swalloy.t, holus bolus, all that I
say further about Mao tone.
