[i] is the high front unrounded vowel. In atypical articulation of this vowel, the front of the tongue is raised towards the hard palate quite high, if not as high as for the cardinal vowel no.1 [F1 300 Hz]. Concomitantly, the velum is raised and the lips spread.
 
It is distributed initially, medially and finally. It, however, has a limited word-initial incidence.
