Here, ve is the antecedent of ek dusre. Notice that ve does not originate as the subject of the sentence. It has moved from the subject position of the small clause to the S-initial (probably focus) position. The subject of the sentence - we will defend this claim shortly - is the phrase ek durse ko containing the anaphor ek durse. If ve were indeed the subject of the sentence, then the S-structure representation of the sentence (the same as its D-structure representation) would have been either (19) or (20) below:
