Verb Phrase

The head of the verb phrase is the verb and it must obligatorily be present.

1.

 aiŋ

sen-a-iŋ

 ‘I am going’
2. abu sen-a-bu ‘We are going’
3. ako  sen-a-ko  ‘they are going’
4.  am  sen-a-m ‘you are going’

In the above sentences, a single intransitive verb connects the verb phrase.


The verb phrase may have NPs which are complements to the verb. The NPs will be direct and indirect objects.

‘They reaped paddy’

  You water   drink - past - cop-PT
‘You drank water’

‘We ate rice’

In the above sentences, the object and the verb constitute the verb phrase.


When there are two NP’s in the VP, the first NP is the indirect object and the second NP is the direct object.
