Distribution of Phonemes 2.6.1. Consonants The table given below shows the distribution of consonant phonemes in the initial, medial and final positions of a word. The plus sign in the table indicates the occurence of a particular phoneme in that particular position and a blank indicates its non-occurence. Among consonants, all can occur in the initial, medial and final positions of a word. The phonemes // and // do not occur in the word-initial position.
